life and hope

Yesterday I came home from work to discover the first green blades pushing through the dirt by the mailbox. I can't begin to tell you how much this thrilled me; the promise of life & hope & spring finally starting to come to pass.

After so many months of snow and cold, I can no longer remember what plant will sprout there. Iris? Tulips? Crocus? Well, whatever it is, I rejoice. I rejoice, too, in the smell of rain and mud, that sweet-humid scent drifting through my open office window.

In the same way, after a long, barren winter, spring has returned to my life and my heart and I am glad.

Nothing Gold Can Stay
Nature's first green is gold,
Her hardest hue to hold.
Her early leaf's a flower;
But only so an hour.
Then leaf subsides to leaf.
So Eden sank to grief,
So dawn goes down to day.
Nothing gold can stay.
